Kangra district authorities in Himachal Pradesh have imposed a temporary ban on trekking activities above 3,000 metres in the Dhauladhar range. The decision, announced by Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa, comes in the wake of harsh winter conditions, including recent light snowfall and plunging nighttime temperatures.
The ban, aimed at ensuring the safety of adventurers, highlights the risks posed by the region’s challenging topography during this time of year.
Details of the Ban
While trekking in the Dhauladhar range is off-limits, trekkers exploring lower-altitude routes such as Kareri Lake, Triund, and Adi Himani Chamunda must now obtain prior permission from the Superintendent of Police (SP), Kangra.
In addition to the trekking restrictions, paragliding pilots are barred from flying near the Dhauladhar range, further ensuring public safety.
District SP Shalini Agnihotri emphasized the seriousness of the order, citing past incidents where trekkers have lost their lives in winter conditions. “In the interest of public safety, trekking on main, link, and local routes has been suspended temporarily. Violations of these magisterial orders will be dealt with under the law,” she said.
Enhanced Monitoring and Exemptions
To enforce the ban, authorities have ramped up safety measures:
- Extra personnel will monitor weather updates from the Meteorological Department in Shimla before granting permissions for lower-altitude treks.
- Disaster response teams such as the NDRF, SDRF, and McLeod Ganj’s Mountaineering Centre are exempt from the ban, as are police engaged in emergency operations.
Reasons for the Ban
The Dhauladhar range, known for its rugged terrain, experienced light snowfall despite Kangra valley’s prolonged six-week dry spell. This has resulted in plummeting temperatures, making trekking in the region increasingly dangerous.
Authorities pointed to the demanding winter conditions and the region’s history of accidents as primary motivators for the restrictions.
Appeal to Trekkers and Enthusiasts
Officials have urged trekkers and paragliding enthusiasts to adhere to the restrictions, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety. The order will remain in place until further notice.
Kangra district’s proactive approach aims to mitigate risks and ensure a safer experience for those visiting the picturesque but unforgiving Dhauladhar range during the winter months.
For now, adventurers are encouraged to plan carefully, respect the restrictions, and enjoy the region responsibly.
