Three-way power formula delaying Maharashtra CM decision

The political situation in Maharashtra remains in a state of flux after the Assembly election results, with uncertainty surrounding the nomination of the Chief Minister. While Eknath Shinde, the incumbent CM, has expressed a desire to continue in office, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems poised to replace him with Devendra Fadnavis as the new Chief Minister, as suggested by Union Minister Ramdas Athawale. Athawale, a key ally, confirmed that the BJP high command had made the decision to install Fadnavis as CM, advising Shinde to step back and accept a lesser role, such as Deputy CM or a Union ministerial position.

The Shinde camp, however, rejected Athawale’s statements, asserting that the final decision would be made collectively by the leadership of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Shirsat emphasized that the matter would be resolved through a press conference, dismissing any division in the Mahayuti alliance.

The delay in forming a new government has also raised concerns about the power-sharing arrangements among the alliance partners. The BJP, with a significantly larger seat count than Shiv Sena and NCP, is expected to take a dominant role in the new government, though Sena and NCP will likely seek key ministerial positions. The sharing of portfolios, particularly the coveted home department, will be a point of contention, as Fadnavis had held the position during his previous tenure as CM.

In the meantime, Shinde continues to serve as the caretaker CM, with the understanding that no major policy decisions will be made until the new government is formed. The situation is further complicated by the need to finalize ministerial appointments and department allocations, which must be resolved ahead of the Winter Session of the state legislature in December. The reshuffling of state-run corporations and the distribution of cabinet posts will also be key issues in the ongoing negotiations within the alliance.

Despite the turbulence, Shinde has appealed to his supporters to refrain from gathering in large numbers to show support, emphasizing the strength of the Mahayuti alliance and the need for stability in Maharashtra’s governance.
