Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his first visit to Guyana as the head of the Indian state in over 50 years, praised the Indian diaspora there, many of whom migrated more than 180 years ago. Modi expressed his appreciation for their success across various sectors and their continued connection to their roots. During his visit, he was warmly welcomed by around 320,000 people of Indian origin, many dressed in traditional attire and waving the Indian tricolour. Modi was received by Guyana’s President Irfan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips, and several cabinet ministers, and was presented with the ‘Key to the City of Georgetown’ as a symbol of the strong India-Guyana relationship. The visit is part of Modi’s three-nation tour, which included stops in Brazil and Nigeria.
