Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday night (early Monday in India) as part of his three-nation tour to participate in the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit. Upon his arrival, he was warmly received by Indian delegates, led by Ambassador Suresh Reddy, and greeted with a unique traditional welcome featuring Vedic chants performed by disciples of Acharya Jonas Massetti, a promoter of Sanskrit and Vedic practices.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi shared his enthusiasm for the summit, expressing hopes for productive discussions with world leaders. The summit holds special significance as India, Brazil, and South Africa form the G20 Troika, with Brazil building upon India’s successful G20 presidency from last year. During India’s tenure, the G20 prioritized the Global South, emphasizing inclusivity and making the forum a “people’s G20.” Brazil is expected to continue this focus, ensuring continuity in addressing the needs of developing nations.
Scheduled for November 18-19, the Rio de Janeiro summit will feature prominent leaders like US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with PM Modi set to hold bilateral talks with several counterparts. His Brazil visit follows a significant trip to Nigeria, where he engaged with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on enhancing bilateral cooperation in defence, technology, health, and education. India also extended 20 tons of humanitarian aid to assist Nigeria’s flood relief efforts. PM Modi’s active global engagement underscores India’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation and addressing global challenges.
