When young Modi traveled on foot and bike to remote areas to understand tribal issues

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bihar, marking the day with reflections on his extensive journey through India’s tribal heartlands. Social media account ‘Modi Archive’ commemorated the occasion by sharing formative moments from PM Modi’s life that shaped his understanding of tribal communities and their challenges.

Key Moments from PM Modi’s Journey:

A Lesson in Poverty and Hunger

During a visit to a remote village, a young Modi was hosted by a swayamsevak’s family. Despite their modest means, they offered him half a bajra roti and milk. Observing the household’s poverty and the longing gaze of their child, Modi chose to forgo the milk, leaving it for the child. This incident left a lasting impression, highlighting the harsh realities of poverty and hunger in rural India.

A Powerful Speech Backed by Research

In the 1980s, while preparing for the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram in Ahmedabad, Modi delivered a stirring 90-minute speech at a fundraiser. Drawing on insights from over 50 books studied in just 12 days, he spoke passionately about tribal development. His speech resonated so deeply with influential business leaders that many offered blank cheques, demonstrating their trust in his vision.

Challenging Post-Independence Poverty

In a 1985 address, Modi questioned why a resource-rich India continued to struggle with poverty 38 years after Independence. He highlighted the systemic neglect of marginalized and tribal communities, urging introspection into the root causes of underdevelopment.

“Even with freedom, our challenges persist. Why is our country unable to progress and stand proudly before the world?”

Lessons from Indian Culture

In 2000, Modi referenced the Ramayana to illustrate the need for social inclusion. Using the story of Lord Ram’s respect for Mata Shabari and the Vanar Sena, he emphasized the importance of mutual reverence and equality in society.

“We must learn not only the Ram-Bhakti of Shabari but also the Shabri-Bhakti of Shri Ram.”

Commitment to Tribal Welfare

PM Modi’s reflections during Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas underscore his lifelong commitment to tribal welfare and inclusive development. His experiences have shaped policies that aim to uplift marginalized communities, reinforcing the cultural and social fabric of India.
