PM Modi, Congress leaders pay tribute to Nehru on his 135th birth anniversary

On the 135th birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to India’s first Prime Minister, acknowledging his legacy with a respectful message on X (formerly Twitter). Modi stated, “On the occasion of his birth anniversary, I pay homage to our former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.”

Nehru’s pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle and as the nation’s leader post-independence was honored across the country, with leaders from various parties sharing their memories and respects. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited Shanti Van in Delhi to pay her respects, describing Nehru as the “creator of modern India.” She shared a heartfelt message quoting Nehru’s powerful words, “Do not be afraid!” and highlighted his vision of building a secure nation prioritizing the welfare of its people. Gandhi also emphasized how Nehru’s ideals continue to inspire her as she campaigns for the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-elections.

November 14 is celebrated as Children’s Day in India in memory of Nehru, who was fondly known as ‘Chacha Nehru’ for his affection toward children. His advocacy for education, child development, and youth rights remains an enduring part of his legacy. After his passing in 1964, the Indian government formally recognized his birthday as Bal Diwas (Children’s Day) to celebrate his contributions to the nation’s children.

Born on November 14, 1889, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru went on to lead India as its first Prime Minister on August 15, 1947. His influence on India’s early years as a democracy and his vision for a progressive nation are celebrated every year on this day, honoring the memory of a leader who shaped modern India.
