Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has issued a heartfelt appeal for unity in cricket, urging nations to come to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. Posting on X, Afridi highlighted the global camaraderie seen in events like the Olympics, calling on cricketing nations to transcend political differences and come together for the love of the game. “If countries once divided by history can unite in the Olympic spirit, why can’t we do the same for cricket and for the Champions Trophy?” he wrote, emphasizing the need for unity and sportsmanship.
Afridi’s appeal comes amid an ongoing standoff between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the tournament’s venue. While Pakistan has invested approximately 17 billion rupees to upgrade stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi to host the event, the BCCI has expressed concerns over sending the Indian team to Pakistan, citing security and political issues. This impasse has raised doubts about the tournament’s venue and feasibility.
In response to India’s stance, the PCB recently wrote to the International Cricket Council (ICC), requesting clarification. The letter reportedly does not mention a hybrid model or alternative formats, indicating Pakistan’s commitment to holding the entire tournament on home soil.
