Tripura: Premature baby weighing just 670 grams survives at Agartala hospital

In a remarkable success story, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at GB Pant Hospital in Agartala has saved the life of a premature baby born at just seven months and weighing only 670 grams. The infant, delivered at Kulai District Hospital in Ambassa, Dhalai District, was quickly transferred to GB Pant Hospital due to its critical condition.

The NICU team, led by Dr. Bibhas Das, provided round-the-clock care, initiating feeding through an OG tube with expressed breast milk and gradually increasing the amount as the baby showed signs of improvement. The infant’s weight eventually increased to a healthy 1.6 kilograms, allowing for discharge.

Dr. Sanjib Debbarma, a senior pediatrician, and Dr. Jayanta Roy, a senior gynecologist, emphasized the significance of medical interventions like steroids to support brain and lung development, which were crucial for the baby’s survival. This success was further supported by the state government’s Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram, which covered the medical costs for the family.

The baby’s parents, Tania Begum and Saiyed Ahmed, expressed their deep gratitude to the medical team for saving their child’s life. Dr. Anup Kumar Saha, Principal of Agartala Government Medical College, noted that this achievement marks a milestone for healthcare in Tripura, underscoring the dedication and expertise of the medical professionals involved.
