Apple’s upcoming iOS 18.2 update promises a range of innovative features under Apple Intelligence, broadening Siri’s capabilities, enriching image and writing tools, and introducing interactive features. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the expected December 2 release will initially be limited to US English users, and expanded language support could follow in future updates.
Key highlights in iOS 18.2 include:
- Genmoji – Apple’s new custom emoji feature allows users to design personalized emojis through detailed prompts, displaying them seamlessly across apps that support rich text. Users can even create Genmoji that resemble people in their photos.
- ChatGPT Integration – Partnering with OpenAI, Apple enhances Siri’s functionality, allowing it to leverage ChatGPT for complex requests like document summaries or unique content generation. This aims to make Siri a versatile bridge to AI, minimizing app-switching for detailed answers.
- Visual Intelligence – Available on the iPhone 16 series, this feature provides real-time insights by using the camera. Pointing at objects or locations (e.g., restaurants) offers details like hours or reviews. The tool can also read aloud, recognize text, and identify items to help users add contacts or shop.
- Writing Tools – Improved customization options let users specify tones beyond standard settings, adding personalized style adjustments like action words or poetic structure for emails and other texts.
- Image Wand – This tool in Notes generates illustrations to accompany notes. You can circle empty areas, or even sketch an idea with Apple Pencil on iPad, and the Wand will create a fitting image.
- Image Playground – A standalone app for creative image generation that allows for animated or illustrated images from user prompts. It integrates with Notes, Messages, and third-party apps, letting users add personalized visuals featuring friends or family.
Apple has also hinted at iOS 18.4 in April, which will further advance Siri’s functionality by letting it use on-screen information to provide more context-based answers, reinforcing Apple’s ongoing push toward AI-enhanced user experiences.
