Mumbai: Scooterist`s throat cut by wire hanging from hoarding

Jared Paul D’Silva, a 35-year-old biker from Andheri, narrowly escaped death after a hanging wire from a hoarding on the Western Express Highway in Bandra West became entangled around his neck while he was riding home. The wire caused a severe eight-centimeter cut across his neck, requiring urgent surgery to prevent life-threatening damage.

The incident occurred around 7 pm on October 28 as D’Silva approached the U-bridge on the highway. After the wire snapped and left him bleeding heavily, he attempted to get help but ultimately had to ride to Lilavati Hospital himself. At the hospital’s busy junction, he encountered Constable Sharad Shinde from the Bandra Traffic Division, who immediately helped him reach the emergency ward and informed the Bandra police. Officers seized the wire and registered an FIR against unidentified persons for negligence.

Following successful surgery, D’Silva described the aftermath: “I could have died. I still can’t speak properly, eating is painful, and I can’t move my head.” He emphasized the danger posed by similar wires hanging along the Western Express Highway and urged authorities to take responsibility. Inspector Pradeep Kelkar of the Bandra police station confirmed that they are investigating the incident and have issued a notice to the hoarding company.

For the next few weeks, D’Silva faces limited mobility due to stitches and continued difficulty speaking and eating. He expressed deep frustration over the negligence, stating, “The person responsible deserves strict punishment.”
