OpenAI has launched its first dedicated web search feature within ChatGPT, a tool to provide users with real-time information like news updates, sports scores, stock prices, and more, alongside links to credible sources. Known as ChatGPT Search, this feature builds on the SearchGPT prototype, allowing users to retrieve up-to-date answers without having to rely solely on traditional search engines. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Search “blends the natural language experience with the latest, reliable data,” giving timely answers enriched with relevant citations.
Currently, ChatGPT Search is accessible to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, along with SearchGPT’s initial waitlist users. OpenAI has indicated that Enterprise and Edu users will gain access in the coming weeks, with plans to gradually roll out the feature to Free users over the next few months.
Key Features of ChatGPT Search:
- Enhanced Real-Time Search: Powered by an upgraded GPT-4 model, ChatGPT Search pulls live data from third-party search engines and partner sites, covering everything from breaking news to shopping and travel recommendations.
- User-Directed Search Options: ChatGPT can automatically decide when to search the web based on query needs, or users can manually initiate a search through a web icon.
- In-Depth Responses with Credible Citations: Results include citations both within the response text and in a sidebar, drawing from news outlets and OpenAI’s partnered data providers like AP and Reuters for elections and other critical updates.
- Advanced Data Processing with o1-preview Models: The new feature incorporates OpenAI’s optimised GPT-4o model, trained with synthetic data and distillation from the o1-preview reasoning models, to deliver more contextually nuanced responses.
OpenAI also plans to enhance ChatGPT Search with additional capabilities in areas like shopping and travel and intends to integrate it into the platform’s Advanced Voice Mode, eventually opening it up to users without an account.
