Bibek Debroy, chairman of PM’s economic advisory council and top economist, passes away at 69

Bibek Debroy, a prominent Indian economist and chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM), has passed away at the age of 69 at AIIMS. Known for his diverse expertise across economics, history, politics, and spirituality, Debroy made lasting contributions to public policy and scholarship on India’s ancient texts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him on social media, describing Debroy as a “towering scholar” who left an “indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape.” Modi acknowledged Debroy’s passion for making India’s classical texts accessible to the youth, highlighting his contributions to translating seminal works such as the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita.

Debroy’s distinguished career spanned roles at institutions like Presidency College, Kolkata, and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi. He also directed a Ministry of Finance and UNDP project focused on legal reforms. His educational background included prestigious institutions, including the Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur, Presidency College, Kolkata, Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge.

As a prolific author and editor, he was instrumental in shaping economic reforms, governance, and infrastructure policies in India. His legacy extends to his significant involvement with NITI Aayog and contributions to numerous publications.
