Ahead of Diwali, Arvind Kejriwal, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), emphasized that Delhi’s ongoing firecracker ban is motivated by health concerns rather than religious considerations. Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal underscored that Diwali is a festival of lights, and fireworks significantly contribute to air pollution, impacting public health, especially for children. Citing the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court’s support for the ban, he encouraged people to light traditional diyas instead, highlighting that prioritizing health transcends religious divides.
Kejriwal also announced that the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) has, for the first time in 18 years, issued salaries and Diwali bonuses to sanitation workers before the month’s end, allowing them to celebrate the festival without financial strain. Expressing his gratitude to these workers, he extended warm Diwali wishes to them and their families, recognizing their essential role in maintaining the city’s cleanliness.
