When PM Modi was hosted by one of world’s wealthiest monarchs – owner of 7,000 cars, a palace with over 1,700 rooms

In September, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the grand Istana Nurul Iman, the largest residential palace globally, marking Modi as the first Indian PM to visit Brunei on a bilateral trip. The visit celebrated 40 years of diplomatic relations, enhancing collaboration in defense, trade, health, technology, and more.

Sultan Bolkiah, known for his lavish lifestyle, is Brunei’s 29th Sultan, reigning since 1968. His palace, covering 2,00,000 square meters with 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, and air-conditioned stables for 200 polo ponies, showcases his wealth. Notably, he owns the world’s largest private car collection, including over 7,000 luxury cars, with a notable 600 Rolls-Royces, some plated in gold. His opulent Boeing 747-400 jet, gold-plated and valued at $400 million, reflects his penchant for luxury. Additionally, he maintains a private zoo with rare animals trained to perform, highlighting his extensive wealth, largely stemming from Brunei’s oil and gas reserves.
