After experiencing a significant defeat in recent assembly elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decided to dissolve all its organizational structures, including youth wings, to reorganize and strengthen its grassroots base. This decision was made during a meeting in Srinagar, led by party president Mehbooba Mufti, and attended by senior party leaders, assembly members, and candidates.
A party spokesperson emphasized that the principles on which the PDP was founded continue to be highly relevant and crucial for addressing Jammu and Kashmir’s issues. He added that the party will focus on drafting comprehensive strategies to improve its public engagement, showcase achievements, and build its grassroots network for future elections, aiming to present itself as a viable democratic alternative.
PDP leaders acknowledged the party’s disappointing performance, managing only three seats in the recent elections, compared to the 28 seats won in the 2014 assembly polls. They attributed part of the loss to the departure of numerous senior leaders, which weakened the party’s influence across Jammu and Kashmir.
A senior PDP leader mentioned that the dissolution of current organizational structures is intended to revitalize the party in preparation for upcoming municipal, panchayat, and district development council (DDC) elections. He said that the restructuring would involve both experienced leaders and young talent, with younger members set to receive mentorship from senior leaders.
The party aims to build on its legacy, citing past achievements under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti, such as initiatives in connectivity, cross-border routes, education, and health, which they believe continue to benefit the public. Reaffirming itself as Kashmir’s second-largest political entity, the PDP plans to reorganize at provincial, district, and block levels, with renewed leadership at each tier to better mobilize voters and prepare for future elections.
