Mumbai: The VP Road police have arrested three individuals following the death of 45-year-old Jamil Khan, a porter from Bihar, who was attacked after a dispute over sleeping on the pavement near a residential building in Girgaon. Khan, who had been living on the streets, succumbed to his injuries after an altercation with residents of the Om Sai Co-operative Society, police said.
The incident occurred on October 22, when Khan was attacked by some of the building’s residents who objected to him sleeping near the property. According to police reports, the altercation escalated from a verbal exchange to a physical confrontation, during which the residents reportedly struck Khan with sticks. Khan was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Following the incident, police registered an FIR against six society members and have taken three suspects into custody: Vishal Shinde, 28, the building’s watchman; Mayank Jethva, 50; and Santosh Singh, a resident. “Our investigation confirmed that these three suspects had attacked Khan using sticks and their hands, which led to his death,” a police officer said.
Initially handled by the DB Marg police, the case was later transferred to the VP Road police station, which has jurisdiction over the area. The suspects are now charged under Section 103 (Murder) and Section 3 (Common Intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police are continuing to investigate and are working to locate Khan’s family.
