Nagaland cabinet to soon meet Centre, Himanta Biwa Sarma to resolve border dispute with Assam

Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton announced that representatives of the Nagaland government will soon meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to address the ongoing border dispute between Nagaland and Assam. Patton made this statement during his visit to Tuli in the Mokokchung district, which borders Assam, on Tuesday. The visit was aimed at assessing the situation on the ground amid rising tensions in the disputed border area.

Patton, accompanied by local MLA A. Pangjung Jamir, DGP Rupin Sharma, and district administration officers, inspected key areas, including the Assam Police Commando Battalion camp at Septsuyong Lu in Kangtsung village and Wameken Yimsen village. The team also engaged with local stakeholders, including the Ao Senden, the district’s apex tribal body.

During discussions with the villagers, Patton informed them that the Nagaland cabinet had discussed the border issue in its October 9 meeting and emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving the dispute. He also highlighted that letters have been sent to the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and Assam’s Chief Minister, and that the Nagaland cabinet will soon hold talks with them. Patton urged the villagers to refrain from selling their land to non-indigenous people, stressing the importance of preserving local ownership.

The border dispute between Nagaland and Assam, which share a 512.1 km interstate border, has been a long-standing issue, with both states accusing each other of encroaching on land in the Disputed Area Belt. The case has been ongoing in the Supreme Court for several years.
