Chennai rain live updates: South-Western railway cancels few express trains due to waterlogging over tracks

Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu have experienced severe waterlogging due to extremely heavy rainfall in the region. Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, along with party leaders, distributed relief materials to sanitation workers in response to the situation. Despite the heavy rains, Stalin assured the public that rainwater was not stagnating in Chennai or its surrounding areas, crediting both the public and sanitation workers for their efforts. He emphasized that the state government is well-prepared to handle any further rainfall.

The heavy rainfall has rapidly filled up reservoirs across the state. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai reported extremely heavy rainfall in various areas over the past 24 hours. Notably, the Cholavaram reservoir in Tiruvallur district recorded 302.6 mm of rainfall, while other reservoirs like Redhills and Chembarambakkam also received significant rain. These high rainfall levels coincide with the onset of the Northeast Monsoon, which began on October 15.
