Tensions are brewing between the BJP and JD(S) over candidate selection for the upcoming Channapatna assembly bypoll, as both parties refuse to back down. The bypoll, along with those for Shiggaon and Sandur, is expected to be announced soon. Channapatna, located in the Vokkaliga heartland, has become a focal point of disagreement. JD(S) insists on fielding a candidate, likely Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of party chief HD Kumaraswamy, while BJP functionaries are pushing for their candidate, CP Yogeshwar, a former MLA with significant regional influence.
The dispute has caused unrest within BJP, with some members advocating for breaking ties with JD(S), calling the alliance a liability. BJP leaders argue that JD(S) should show the same cooperation that the BJP extended in Mandya, where Kumaraswamy became a Union minister with their support. If the parties cannot reach a consensus, the alliance could fracture, potentially giving Congress an edge in the bypoll.
Yogeshwar, confident about getting the BJP ticket, has hinted he may run independently if no agreement is reached. Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy has stated that JD(S) is open to discussions with BJP to preserve the alliance and a decision will be made soon.
