The Republican Party of India held a protest meeting at Jantar Mantar today to protest against the implementation of the Slum Protection Act in Delhi and save 675 slums and around 20 lakh people. Dr Rajiv Menon, National Secretary General of the Republican Party, was the chief guest at the meeting. Fakhre Alam Delhi President, Anil Delhi Working President, Manju Chhibber, Lakshmi, Sunil and about 600 members were present. Dr Rajiv Menon urged the Delhi government to improve people’s basic amenities such as electricity, drinking water, transport, education, health and sanitation in slums.
He said the slums are pathetic pictures of the national capital, Delhi, and lakhs of people live in huts where families of five to 10 people live together with rooftops that touch their heads when they stand up straight. He said the people in the slums are going through very poor living conditions such as lack of land, improper housing, inadequate infrastructure, poor quality education, lack of sanitation services, unsafe drinking water, etc.
The agitation highlighted the issues in about five slums, including Kuthumbu and Vasant Vihar. Dr Rajiv Menon pointed out that the Delhi government is not interfering in the problems of the nearly 20 lakh people who have gathered from different states. The meeting was held with the participation of a large number of people. Dr Rajeev Menon said that he will raise his voice against the government by exposing the slums that are suffering in such a manner. He added that the RPI will contest all the 70 seats on its own in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
