‘Jab dil ke darwaze …’: PM Modi’s meeting with Biden was an emotional one, says foreign secretary Misri

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Joe Biden held an emotional bilateral meeting at Biden’s private residence in Wilmington, Delaware on Saturday. The encounter was particularly significant, as it marked their final official meeting, with Biden not running for re-election. During the meeting, PM Modi emphasized their close personal relationship, stating, “Jab dil ke darwaze khul jaate hain, to ghar ke darwaaje bhi khul jaate hain” (When the doors of the heart open, so do the doors of the house), according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

The meeting, held in a personal setting, symbolized the deep bond that has developed between the two leaders over the past four years. Misri noted that it was an emotional and special moment for PM Modi, acknowledging that this was likely a farewell encounter with Biden in his capacity as U.S. President.

PM Modi and Biden have worked closely together on various global and regional issues, strengthening the US-India Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership, which both leaders see as pivotal in addressing global challenges. Their partnership was underscored by Biden’s invitation to Modi for an official State Visit in the past year, further solidifying ties between the two nations.

The White House also released a statement reaffirming the significance of the US-India relationship, calling it the “defining partnership of the 21st century”, highlighting that it is delivering on an ambitious agenda for the global good.
