Indian speedster Akash Deep was at the receiving end of a ‘wretched’ throw by Bangladesh’s fielder Hasan Mahmud during the first innings on Day 2 of the Chennai test. The throw left the pacer in pain, who was looking in good touch after scoring three boundaries in his short innings. As the physio was tending to Akash, Mahmud was spotted apologising to him for his reckless throw.
As the 27-year-old recovered from the pain, players in the Indian dressing room were caught in splits after a supposed comment from Virat Kohli in conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir, who was known for his tough demeanour otherwise, was also sharing a laugh with captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
Akash Deep inflicted twin blows off successive deliveries as Bangladesh were left reeling at 26/3 in reply to India’s 376 at lunch on day two of the first Test. Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up left-handed opener Shadman Islam in the opening over, before Akash Deep dismissed Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque in succession to leave them in dire straits at 22/3.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto was holding fort with an unbeaten 15, while Mushfiqur Rahim was batting at four with Bangladesh still trailing by 350 runs.
Resuming on 339/6, India were bowled out for 376 in 91.2 overs with Hasan Mahmud dismissing Bumrah to complete his five-wicket haul. Ravichandran Ashwin’s incredible knock ended on 113, adding 11 runs to his overnight total, while Ravindra Jadeja fell on 86.
