Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while inaugurating the Sankara College of Nursing (Women) on Sunday, urged nursing students to learn the local language of the regions where they intend to work. She pointed out the increasing global demand for Indian healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, and emphasized that language proficiency would greatly boost their career opportunities.
Sitharaman shared insights from her visit to Singapore, where she noted the high regard for Indian nurses and physiotherapists. She highlighted that countries like Japan and many European nations are especially looking to hire Indian nurses to care for their ageing populations.
In addition, the Finance Minister stressed the importance of language skills within India itself, citing the need for nurses to communicate effectively with patients in regional languages such as Punjabi or Bengali. She encouraged nursing students to pursue language courses digitally alongside their medical training to enhance their ability to serve in diverse regions both domestically and internationally.
