The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is currently deliberating on the next Chief Minister of Delhi, with several names being considered. The party’s legislative body will make the final decision, but some key figures are emerging as prominent contenders.
Atishi is a leading candidate due to her extensive responsibilities, managing 13 portfolios including finance, planning, PWD, water, power, education, higher education, services, and publicity. Her significant role in the party’s expansion and policy formulation, including her involvement in the 2013 assembly elections manifesto, underscores her suitability. Her recent role in the party’s communications and handling critical issues like the Delhi water dispute also supports her candidacy.
Manish Sisodia, the former deputy CM and education minister, is reportedly out of contention. Sisodia’s previous stance was that he would only return to the role if the people of Delhi deemed him honest. This seems to be a factor in his current exclusion from consideration.
Sunita Kejriwal, Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, has been discussed due to her increased visibility and involvement in political activities. However, her potential candidacy could lead to allegations of nepotism, which the party might want to avoid.
Gopal Rai, a long-standing party member and current Delhi convenor, is also considered a safe option due to his non-controversial stance and long-term commitment to the party since the Anna Hazare movement. His background as a Poorvanchali might also help balance the party’s representation.
Saurabh Bharadwaj, the health minister and a vocal MLA, is another potential candidate. His active role in party and government affairs, as well as his confrontations with BJP and the LG, make him a strong contender.
Rakhi Birla, the deputy speaker in the assembly and a scheduled caste candidate, is also being considered. Her potential nomination could signal the party’s commitment to social justice and representation.
The decision will ultimately reflect the party’s strategic interests and the image it wishes to project in the upcoming political landscape.
