Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal’s legislative assembly, has accused the Kolkata police of evidence tampering following the arrest of Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala police station, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In a post on X, Adhikari claimed that the police played a direct role in derailing the investigation into the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He further alleged that these actions were orchestrated and monitored by senior officials of the Kolkata police.
The CBI’s recent arrests, including Mondal and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, are part of the ongoing investigation into the incident. Adhikari demanded the suspension of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and called for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation as state home minister, citing her lack of moral authority.
In the wake of this case, junior doctors in Kolkata have been protesting for five consecutive nights, demanding justice and improved security at medical institutions. On Saturday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the protesting doctors at Swasthya Bhawan, assuring them that their demands would be addressed and those responsible would face consequences. Banerjee urged the doctors to resume work, promising that the government would review their concerns and take appropriate action.
The protests were sparked by the tragic rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate medical student on August 9, which has since caused widespread outrage in the medical community.
