Maharashtra BJP workers and leaders organized statewide protests on Friday in response to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s comments on reservation during his visit to the United States, as reported by PTI.
Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that the protest was necessary to highlight what he described as Gandhi’s negative stance on the reservation system.
On the other hand, Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat criticized the BJP for allegedly spreading misinformation and staging theatrics around the issue.
While speaking at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, Gandhi remarked that the Congress would consider reviewing the reservation system when India achieves fairness, a situation he suggested does not exist at present. At a separate event at the National Press Club in Washington, Gandhi also claimed that India’s democracy had been weakened over the last decade but noted that efforts were underway to restore it.
Following Gandhi’s remarks on reservation, the BJP called for state-wide demonstrations. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra Housing Minister Atul Save led a protest with party members, holding placards and raising slogans against Gandhi.
In Mumbai, BJP legislator Manisha Chowdhary referenced historical opposition by Congress to reservations, dating back to the time of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
