Rajya Sabha MP Sujeet Kumar expelled by Naveen Patnaik’s BJD, joins BJP

The Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Friday expelled Rajya Sabha MP Sujeet Kumar for his alleged “anti-party activities”. Sujeet Kumar later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Meanwhile, the office of the Vice-President of India in a statement said Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, has accepted the resignation of Sujeet Kumar from the council of states (Rajya Sabha) with immediate effect, “finding the same in conformity with Article 101 3(b) of the Constitution”.

Sujeet Kumar joined the BJP in the presence of Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other senior party leaders. Kumar has resigned from the Upper House, the BJP’s chief spokesperson Anil Baluni told a press conference at the party headquarters.

BJD chief Naveen Patnaik said in an order that Kumar stood expelled from the party with “immediate effect for anti-party activities”.

“He has let down the party, which sent him to the Rajya Sabha and the hopes and aspirations of the people of Kalahandi district,” Patnaik said in the order.
