Rahul Gandhi makes ‘two Indias’ comment; but it’s different from Vir Das’

NEW DELHI: India has got a taste of its diversity every time someone has made “two Indias” comment, inviting views and opinions from different ideological spectrums. This time, its Rahul Gandhi reiterating his attack on the central government over different treatment meted out to the rich and the poor.

The comment came as a deja vu for the public, especially at a time when the country is witnessing protests demanding justice for the rape and murder of Kolkata doctor on August 9. Comedian Vir Das, in 2021, had been critised for his standup special when he had said that he comes from ‘two Indias’, one where Indian men worship women during the day and another, where they gang-rape women at night.

Rahul’s comment, however, came in the context of writing off debts of the rich but not of the poor.

“Two Indias are being created. One is made of Arabpatis which has 20-25 people. And the other has labourers, farmers and the unemployed youth,” Rahul Gandhi said addressing a rally in Maharashtra’s Sangli on Thursday.

He accused the central government of writing off debts of “Arabpatis” of over Rs 16 lakh crores.

“Narendra Modi ji wrote off Rs 16 lakh crore debt of these 20-25 people. But he never did so for the farmers. Our government did away with Rs 70,000 crore debt burden of farmers,” the leader of opposition said.

“Our fight is for one India. If the banks’ thresholds are open for the Arabpatis, it should be open for the farmers, labourers and the youth as well. If their debt of Rs 16 lakh crore is being done away with, then farmers’ debt should also be done away with,” he added.

The leader of opposition also recalled the incident when he wasn’t allowed to name Adani and Ambani during his speech in the Parliament earlier this year.

“I was told in the Parliament that I can’t take Adani and Ambani’s name. So, I gave them a new name- A1 and A2,” he said.

Rahul visited the state, which is set to go to polls later this year, to unveil a statue of the late Congress leader Patangrao Kadam. Kadam was a prominent figure in the state’s political landscape, holding several ministerial positions over the years.
