Instagram is working on a new profile layout, might do away with the square grid

In Short

  • Instagram’s profile layout might change to vertical grid
  • For now, the platform is testing the new layout with a few users only
  • This will be the first time profile square grid will be changed

Instagram is planning to revamp the profile layout. Ditching the square grid, the reports claim that the social media platform is testing to bring a vertical profile layout. We have been using the squarish grid since its inception, but now maybe it is time for a big change. According to the reports, the revamped profile layout with the vertical rectangles is available for only a handful users for now.

According to spokesperson Christine Pai, the platform will gather user feedback before deciding whether to implement the change widely, acknowledging that some users may have designed their profiles around the existing square grid format, reported The Verge.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained that the platform’s shift towards a vertical profile grid aligns with user behaviour, as most content uploaded is already vertical (4:3 photos or 9:16 videos). He noted that cropping this content to fit a square grid can be detrimental to its appearance, making the vertical grid a more natural fit.

He added that the squarish format was created back in the day when Instagram only allowed uploading square photos on the platform.

The new vertical profile grid layout could be a welcome change for users who primarily create content in a vertical format, as it will enable them to share posts and reels without the need for cropping, preserving the original aspect ratio and full content.

Recently, Instagram has also increased the number of uploads for a post. Earlier, you were only allowed to upload 10 media pieces in a post but now you can add up to 20. While not all users require that much space, it may help the storytellers and content creators.

Now, it will be interesting to note how the marriage of the vertical grid and 20 media pieces will pull off. The impact of Instagram’s new feature will depend on how users utilise it. Regardless of your posting style, this update promises to transform your Instagram experience, bringing a surge in content to both create and consume.
