Opening Weekend Success and Monday Slump
Vicky Kaushal’s latest film, “Bad Newz,” co-starring Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk, saw a strong start in theaters over its first weekend. However, the film experienced a significant decline on its first Monday. After earning over Rs 11 crore on Sunday, “Bad Newz” could only collect Rs 3.5 crore on Monday, reflecting a 68% drop, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This brings the film’s domestic nett total to Rs 33.2 crore.
Comparisons and Milestones
Upon its release, “Bad Newz” became Vicky Kaushal’s biggest opener, surpassing the initial earnings of his hit film “Uri.” By the fourth day of its release, “Uri” had made Rs 46.24 crore, indicating that the 2019 film still holds the record for Vicky’s highest-grossing film. “Bad Newz” has been compared to other recent films like “Crew” and “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya” (TBMAUJ), as their opening figures were similar. Both “Crew” and “TBMAUJ” also experienced a similar fall of over 60% on their first Monday.
Worldwide Earnings and Regional Performance
According to Sacnilk, “Bad Newz” has earned Rs 54 crore worldwide, which is promising given its Rs 33 crore earnings in India. This performance is notable compared to last week’s release “Sarfira,” which only managed to make Rs 21.42 crore in its 11-day theatrical run.
On Monday, “Bad Newz” had an overall occupancy rate of 13.65%, with night shows achieving the highest occupancy at 17.54%. In the Delhi-NCR region, with 1084 shows, the occupancy was at 15%, and in Mumbai, with 780 shows, it was at 15.5%.
Prospects and Promotions
With minimal competition in the upcoming week, “Bad Newz” has the potential to continue its success. Dharma Productions, the makers of the film, have introduced a ‘Buy One Get One’ ticket offer, which could further boost box office numbers. This promotion, along with the film’s current momentum, suggests that “Bad Newz” could become another hit for Vicky Kaushal, following the success of last year’s “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke,” which made over Rs 80 crore at the box office.
