Washington: On Sunday, Donald Trump attributed his survival during an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania campaign rally to divine intervention, urging Americans to unite.
“It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” the former US president and presidential hopeful stated on social media, calling on fellow Americans to unite and “not allow Evil to Win.”
Trump was injured in the ear during the assassination attempt at Saturday’s rally, a shocking event that is likely to escalate political tensions ahead of the US presidential election.
The 78-year-old was quickly escorted off stage with blood on his face after the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooter and a bystander were killed, and two spectators were critically injured.
President Joe Biden, who is set to face Trump in the upcoming presidential election, condemned the violence, stating, “There is no place in America for this kind of violence.”
“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united and show our true character as Americans. We must remain strong and determined, and not allow evil to win,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday morning, confirming his attendance at the Republican National Convention, starting Monday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
